Is Content King for SEO?

I always hear people saying content is king and then others say the total opposite that it doesn’t matter.  Those that say it doesn’t matter suggest that getting links to your site is the only thing that matters.  I think that both are somewhat correct but one shouldn’t be used without the other – at least if you want to get traffic in the future.

I often see sites with top rankings which only have a few content pages or even just one page.  f see it for fairly competitive keywords too.  Then when you look at the links pointed to that one page site, you will see that it has a lot.  So you can rank your site without having much content on it just by links, but this isn’t a very good long term strategy.  Here are my reasons why:

  • Sites with lots of content are looked at as an authoritative source.
  • Sites with lots of content have more words which can bring in a lot of long tail keywords.  You’d be amazed at how much long tail searches can help.
  • You never know if Google will adjust their algorithms allow higher content sites being ranked higher than low content sites even if it has a lot of back links.
  • Having a lot of content can produce links effortlessly without having to ask for them.
  • Producing constantly updated content can produce a following of people who are willing to submit it to social media sites for you.
  • Having informational content pages in addition to your product pages can help engage visitors.
  • Having more content pages allows you to anchor text keywords to pages that you want to get ranked for.
  • Some suggest that Google notices sites that have a lot of interaction and activity from users which is a sign of trust and a good resource, the more pages of content the more interaction you will have from visitors.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the internet is becoming more social so sites that interact and have a voice are more likely to succeed in the future.  Having a voice is establishing yourself as an authority where people follow your business and you don’t express yourself as a company but as a real person.  Then as social media becomes even bigger, everyday people will promote or recommend your site to their friends.
