The first time I used twitter, I spent a few hours on their web site setting everything up, also, downloading and setting up the widget, so that my “tweets” would appear on my web page. I head up the Marketing Department at my Company, so we were all trying to figure out how we could use Twitter to help us get our marketing message out.

We were trying to, not only figure out how to use it, but also trying to get the lingo down. One of my co-workers mentioned that “tweeting” was also called having a “twonversation”. This struck me as funny and sort of “Elmer Fuddish”. Now whenever someone asks me a question when I am “tweeting”, I will say to them emphatically, “I am twying-to-have-a-twonversation.”

The definition of Twitter on Wikipedia is: a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers

How do I use Twitter for business?

1.One of the most important objectives for Twitter is as a way to monitor your brand and reputation. Anytime anything is being said about your company, products, people, or services you can track it and respond instantly. You can also use a set of readily available tools to track what’s being said about any search term you like. This is another way to find people with shared interests.

2. Use advanced search to filter everything that’s being said about your keyword phases in your town. For example, let’s say you are a web developer in Cincinnati, OH. You would set up an advanced search for people in Cincinnati, OH complaining about their web developer. You could then use that information to develop leads. For example, if you wanted to know if anyone in Cincinnati is asking about web development? You would go to advanced search and type: “near:Cincinnati within:50mi web development?” Adding a question mark after the words web development, will help locate people who are asking questions. You could then proceed by responding and starting a conversation (twonversation).
